To recognize his years of service and contributions to Connecticut, former state Sen. John McKinney will be honored at a dinner and roast on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 6-10 p.m. at the Gaelic American Club, 74 Beach Road, Fairfield.
During the Fairfield Republican Town Committee (FRTC) event, McKinney will be roasted by former State House Minority Leader Larry Cafero, current state Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano, and former state Sen. Bill Aniskovich.
Co-masters of ceremonies will be state Rep. Brenda Kupchick and FRTC Chairman James Millington.
“As the son of the late Congressman Stewart McKinney, and Lucie McKinney, two individuals who had a tremendous impact on our town and state, John was guided by the lessons and values learned from them, and in turn, we have been led by him which is why it’s time to come together to honor him,” Millington said.
Eight terms in the Senate
John McKinney served in the state Senate for 16 years, representing his hometown of Fairfield as well as Easton, Newtown, Weston and Westport. He was elected minority leader of the Senate in June 2007, serving in that leadership position through 2014.
Last year, McKinney made an unsuccessful run for the Republican nomination for governor.
According to FRTC publicity material, McKinney was known for trying to lower taxes, eliminate wasteful government spending, create jobs, improve transportation, protect the environment, increase access to affordable housing, and end homelessness.
In 2007, he was named Legislator of the Year by the Bridgeport Regional Business Council.
