Mayor Mark Lauretti said he wants to get more involved in setting the direction of the state Republican Party.
Lauretti had floated his name for the state party chairman’s position, but now the current chairman will remain in the job through June.
“People in Hartford, and who come out of Hartford, have no idea what goes on locally,” he said. “The party’s message is poor and our outreach is worse.”
Lauretti said he could be both Republican Party state chairman and mayor, noting he was mayor and a restaurant owner at the same time for 15 years.
The entity that runs the statewide GOP is called the Republican State Central Committee, and the party chairman is selected every two years by the 72-member State Central Committee.
