St. Joseph principal to retire after 38-year career in education

Kenneth Mayo, principal of St. Joseph High School in Trumbull since 2008, announced to the faculty on Thursday that he would retire at the end of this school year.

Shelton-StJosephHSMayo has worked at the parochial school as a religion teacher, football coach, department head, dean of students, and principal over the course of his 38-year career in education.

Much of the history of the school occurred during his tenure. Mayo worked with Brother Edward Caffery, Father Karpinski, Monsignor Richard Shea, Brother Shane, Father Petrucci, Richard Bishop, and Matthew Kenny.

On reflection though, Mayo said, he would attribute most of his professional skills to the influence of an assistant principal, Sister Catherine Fanning.

‘A lifetime of service’

William Fitzgerald, St. Joseph president, said that Mayo “embodies our school motto: Privilege and Responsibility. Ken is always focused on the outcome, on the character formation of our graduates. It has been a pleasure to work with him, and an education.

“He has taught me what makes St. Joe’s special. That’s the people. I thank him, on their behalf, for a lifetime of service. He is St. Joe’s,” Fitzgerald said.

Went to Fairfield U and SHU

Mayo and his wife, Jeannie, saw their two sons, Sean and Kevin, graduate from St. Joe.

He attended St. Ambrose Elementary and Harding High in Bridgeport, went to Fairfield University, and received his master’s degree from Sacred Heart University before coming to St. Joe’s.

College preparatory school

St. Joseph High School is a co-ed college preparatory school located on Huntington Turnpike in Trumbull.

“The school provides a learning environment that embraces the Gospel values of the Roman Catholic faith and promotes a commitment to family and community,” according to publicity material.
