The Shelton High girls’ basketball team had few answers for Amity Regional’s back-court tandem of Molley Dragan and Elise Graham as the Spartans rolled to a 50-35 road victory on Friday night.
Dragan scored a game-high 19 points and Graham chipped in with 15 for Amity, which won its eighth game of the season and qualified for the upcoming CIAC Class LL tournament.
Amity broke the game open in the second quarter after the teams were deadlocked, 5-5, after the first eight minutes. The Spartans went on a 23-7 run to open up a 28-14 lead by halftime.
“We made only four of 30 field-goal attempts in that first half and we were never able to get in any sort of rhythm,” said first-year Shelton coach Joe Cavallaro. “It didn’t take long for the game to get out of hand.”
Amity’s pressure defense also caused Shelton to turn the ball over 25 times as the Gaelettes fell to 5-11 on the season and will need three wins in their final four games (beginning on Tuesday night at Sheehan) in order to make the post-season.
Shelton got seven points each from sophomores Sarah Skoronski and Mackenzie Bures along with six points and five rebounds from Sivan Tepper who came off the bench.
Casey O’Connor paced Shelton with seven rebounds.
