Shelton Alderman John Papa is at home recovering and doing well, Board of Alderman President John Anglace told his colleagues at a meeting Wednesday night.

“He’s on the road to getting better,” Anglace said.

Papa recently faced a medical challenge and spent time in the hospital, in what may have been partly a reaction to medication.

‘I feel a lot better’

“I feel a lot better,” Papa said from his home on Thursday afternoon. “I should be back into things in March.”

Papa noted he’s always been blessed with good health, having never had to take medicine until this recent incident that was related to his blood pressure. “I’ve never had medical problems,” he said. “This was a shock to me.”

He was in the hospital for three weeks, spending some time in the intensive care unit. Papa said there has been no permanent damage to his heart.

First elected in 1993

Papa is a Republican from the Fourth Ward, which includes the Huntington section. He was first elected to that position in 1993.

He also chairs the city Parks and Recreation Committee, and works as a distributor representative for a major corporation in the oil lubrication industry.

When younger, the 1958 Stratford High School graduate played professional baseball. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles out of high school, and in the early 1960s spent parts of a few seasons in the major leagues with the team as a relief pitcher. Most of his baseball career was in the minor leagues, lasting until 1966.
