The Shelton High wrestling team finished in seventh place at the Southern Connecticut Conference Tournament on Saturday at Amity High in snowy Woodbridge.
The Gaels finished with 65 points, placing them well behind Xavier High of Middletown (233), who won the SCC title for the fourth year in a row. Foran High of Milford (120 points), Daniel Hand of Madison (114), Guilford (89) and Branford (85) rounded out the top five, followed by Fairfield Prep (73.5).
Kyle McGinnis was Shelton’s top finisher on the day, as the junior fell to Xavier’s Patrick Precourt via pin in 5:20 in the 138-pound final.
At 285, Kyle Tobin placed third with a 3-2 win over Amity’s Nick Photos, while Malike Malcolm won the bronze medal with a 7-2 minor decision over East Haven’s Neil Merola. Chandler Duhaime placed fourth at 106 and Dan Persson was fourth at 152.
Shelton will compete in the Class LL state tournament next weekend at Trumbull High.
