Shelton company sponsors fire safety effort

A Shelton-based company is helping to fund a fire safety education program designed to help young children in Bridgeport.

BIC Consumer Products will sponsor the “Play Safe! Be Safe!” workshop to educate teachers on preschoolers’ perception of fire and how to promote fire safety to children ages 3 to 5.

The upcoming session will take place March 5 at Salem Lutheran Church in Bridgeport. It will be led by fire safety expert, Robert Cole.

In 2010 in the United States, 44,900 fires were started by children, usually those ages 1 to 5. These fires resulted in 90 deaths, 890 injuries and $210 million in property damage.
