Duhaime and Persson on to State Open

The Shelton High wrestling team finished 13th at the Class LL championships at Trumbull High on Saturday.

Chandler Duhaime at 106 pounds and Dan Persson at 152 pounds took sixth place and will next compete in the State Open set for New Haven on Friday and Saturday.

Newtown High (282.5) won the team title, followed by Danbury (231), Simsbury (189), Xavier-Middletown (189) and Trumbull (183).

“I’m happy for our two underclassmen going to the Open and I’m disappointed for some of our upperclassmen who just finished their season,” Gael coach Bill Maloney said.

Duhaime brought a 24-5 record into the day and the sophomore won his first match by 2:53 fall before losing 7-1 to third-place finisher Tristan Haviland from Trumbull in the quarterfinals.

The fifth-seeded Chandler won his first consolation match 13-0, but got banged up in earning an 8-6 win over Ridgefield’s Jesse Walker in the consolation quarterfinals.
“We weren’t going to risk Chandler further injury, so we defaulted him his next two matches. He was already going to Opens,” Mahoney said.

Persson, a junior with an 18-14 record, was seeded ninth and was dropped into wrestlebacks after a first-round loss.
In the consolation bracket, Persson won by pins in 1:39 and 4:50 before dropping a 6-0 decision to Ethan Ross from Greenwich.

Kyle McGinnis, coming back from mononucleosis, won his first-round match by 27-second fall before losing to sixth-place finisher Patrick Precourt from Xavier in 3:31.
The fifth seed won his first wrestle back in 3:00, but then lost 8-2 to sixth-place finisher Steven Rost from Glastonbury.

“Kyle just doesn’t have anything in the tank,” Maloney said. “If he’s 75 percent that’s stretching it.”

Junior John Litts split his championship round matches at 145 pounds, winning by fall in 1:02, before losing to fifth-place finisher Mohammed Abdul-Akeem from Stamford.

Senior John Rosa at 113 pounds, sophomore Alex Ercolani at 132 pounds, senior Malike Malcolm at 220 pounds and senior heavyweight Kyle Tobin each won a match to add to the team score.
