A 24-year-old Connecticut man was killed when his vehicle plunged off the Route 8 highway, falling from an overpass to the road below.
Marc Francis Mulhall, 24, of Waterbury died in the Saturday accident near Exit 30 of Route 8, slightly south of the interchange with Interstate 84. The accident occurred at about 1:50 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 21.
According to a State Police accident report, Mulhall was driving north on Route 8 when his vehicle veered out of the established lane, collided with a guardrail, “went airborne and subsequently fell from the overpass onto the road below (Nicholas Drive).”
State troopers responding to the accident found the vehicle — a 2002 Mitsubishi Diamante — on the road below the highway, but it was unoccupied.
They then searched the surrounding area and found Mulhall about one-fifth of a mile from accident scene, inside a fenced lot that housed a commercial business.
Pronounced dead at scene
Mulhall was unresponsive and members of an ambulance crew, called to the scene, then pronounced him dead. His body was turned over to the state Chief Medical Examiner’s Office, and next of kin was notified.
State Police are trying to determine details of the accident, including the location of the deceased man’s body in relation to the vehicle. The accident report indicates Mulhall was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, and that the vehicle’s airbag deployed.
“The status of this case will remain active, pending further investigation,” according to the State Police.
The State Police are seeking anyone who witnessed the accident or has any information on it. People can contact Trooper Jonathan Conlon in the Southbury barracks at 203-267-2240.
