Football: Piccirillo wins Scholar Athlete Award

The 55th anniversary of the Casey-O’Brien New Haven County Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete dinner will be held on Friday, April 10, at Fantasia, 404 Washington Ave, North Haven.

Shelton High’s Mark Piccirillo will receive one of the scholar athlete awards.

A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. with the march to the head table at 6:30 p.m.

Twenty-seven high school and prep school scholar athletes who play football will be honored for academic excellence, leadership and citizenship. “We have another outstanding group of young men the we are honoring this year,” said Bill O’Brien chapter president. “All they have achieved on the field and in the classroom should make their family, school and community very proud.”

In addition, other award winners include acclaimed actor Dan Lauria, a former SCSU all-conference linebacker, who in the 2010-11 season did over 275 performances of Vince Lombardi, the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers, in the Broadway production of the play ‘Lombardi.’

He also appeared in over 70 television episodic programs and more than 20 Movie of the Week productions. He is most recognized as the ‘dad’ in the highly acclaimed Emmy winning ABC television show ‘The Wonder Years’.

Also being recognized are former coach Paul Sponheimer of Seymour, who will receive the Chapter Award of Merit for his many years of service to the chapter, Anthony Sagnella of North Branford and the head coach at North Haven, who will receive the Coach of the Year Award and Bill Schule of Hamden, a well-regarded football official who will receive the Official Recognition Award as selected by the New Haven Football Officials Association.

A state championship award will also be presented to Xavier High School for winning the Class LL championship in December.
