Elected to Senate at age 29
In 1972, at age 29, he became one of the youngest people ever elected to the U.S. Senate. He was elected as a Democrat from Delaware.
Just weeks after that election, tragedy struck the Biden family, when Biden’s wife, Neilia, and their 1-year old daughter, Naomi, were killed and their two young sons critically injured in an auto accident.
In 1977, Vice President Biden married Jill Jacobs. She currently teaches at a Washington, D.C.-area community college.
Oversaw major Senate committees
Biden served in the Senate for 36 years, chairing the Judiciary Committee and Foreign Relations Committee for extended periods during his tenure.
Biden has three children and five grandchildren. His son Beau serves as Delaware’s attorney general.
