Sacred Heart University expects to begin offering a new undergraduate degree in theater arts this fall, pending state approval.

The program will be part of SHU’s Department of Communication and Media Studies, and will be based on the main campus in Fairfield.

“This major was the exciting next step to our fast growing theater arts program,” said Jerry Goehring, artistic director of the new major.

Theater and entertainment fields

The theater arts major is intended to prepare students to work in the theater, performing arts and entertainment fields.

Students will earn the degree in one of two tracks: acting or musical theater. Courses will include acting, directing, scene analysis, playwriting, and voice for musical theater.

Goehring, who started the theater arts program in 2009, is a Tony-nominated Broadway producer.
