McDermott’s talk, “Winners Dream: A Journey from Corner Store to Corner Office,” is free and open to the public.

McDermott oversees 74,400 employees at SAP. The company operates a computer cloud system and the world’s largest business network, with more than $600 billion transacted annually, according to publicity material.

From deli worker to big-time CEO

McDermott is the author of a national best-selling book, “Winners Dream: A Journey from Corner Store to Corner Office.”

He will discuss leadership and career success during his presentation at Fairfield University. He’ll describe how he made the journey from working in a small deli on Long Island to the position of global CEO.

“As his story shows, it’s not what you start out with — he had very little. It’s how you leverage hard work and energy to inspire others that really supercharges achievement in business,” said Don Gibson, dean of the Dolan School of Business.

The Charles F. Dolan Lecture series was established at Fairfield University in 2001.
