A Thursday accident on Route 8 that caused temporary closings and traffic delays on the highway led to the death of a Stratford driver.
It was the third fatal accident to occur near Route 8’s Exit 13 (Bridgeport Avenue/Constitution Boulevard South) in the past month, and is still under investigation by the State Police.
According to a State Police traffic report, the accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. when Walls’ vehicle was traveling in the northbound direction between the off and on ramps of Exit 13.
Walls’ vehicle, a 1999 Honda Civic, “veered into the center median, struck the metal beam guardrail, and crossed over into the southbound travel lanes,” states the report.
Hit southbound vehicle
Her vehicle then hit a car going south on Route 8, impacting the driver’s side of that vehicle, according to the report. The southbound car was being driven by a 63-year-old Westport resident, who suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
“[Walls] suffered serious injuries and was pronounced deceased … at Bridgeport Hospital,” states the report.
Walls and the injured Westport driver were the only occupants of their vehicles. According to the accident report, airbags deployed on both vehicles. Walls was not wearing a seatbelt and the Westport driver was wearing a seatbelt, states the report.
“This case is currently under investigation,” according to the State Police.
Shelton fire squads did extrication
Shelton’s Echo Hose and Huntington fire companies were among the emergency personnel responding to the accident.
The arriving fire units found “a two-car accident with one patient in traumatic arrest and trapped in the vehicle,” according to an Echo Hose Fire posting.
“Squad 1 was able quickly extricate the patient in under five minutes, who was then transported to the hospital by EMS but did not survive,” the posting continued.
“Our condolences to the victim’s family,” stated the Echo Hose Fire posting.
