Long ball leads Shelton softball to victory

Paced by grand slam home home runs from Gina Ciambriello and Lillian Rivera and a solo shot by Kayla Resto, the Shelton High softball team overpowered Wilbur Cross, 21-0, on Friday afternoon at Blake Field in New Haven.

The Gaels, who won for the fourth time this year against 13 losses, pounded out 16 hits, including four from Ciambriello and three each from Mackenzie Bures and Rivera.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Resto’s lead-off round-tripper, the Gaels exploded for seven runs in the second before adding three in the three and 10 more in the fourth.

The game was stopped after five innings by the mercy rule.

Shelton winning pitcher Lexi Calhoun pitched a one-hit shutout while striking out seven and walking only two.

Rivera finished with six runs-batted in while Ciambriello had four and Bures had three.

“We’ve had an up-and-down season so far,” said Shelton head coach Joanne Desrochers. “Today, we kept hitting and hitting. Hopefully, we can carry this over into our final three games. It would give us a chance to win seven games.”

Sabrina Prehosimone had Cross’ only hit, a single in the third. The loss left the Governors with a 2-15 record.
