Shelton Intermediate bands, choir get accolades at music competition

The Shelton Intermediate School Viking band, jazz choir and jazz band competed in the Music in the Parks Festival in Bristol in late May for the third year in a row.

SIS was one of nine schools from Connecticut and New York participating in the festival.  Each group performed two songs for judging panels made up of music educators, performers and college professors.

The SIS jazz choir, under the direction of Carole Sylvester, came in first place in the Show Choir category. The jazz band, directed by Mark Bilotta, came in first place in the Jazz Ensemble category.

The Viking band, also under the direction of Bilotta, came in second place in the Concert Band category.

SIS seventh grader Hanna Farag, an alto saxophone player, received a medal for Best Overall Jazz Soloist. An SIS student has now won this individual award for three years in a row.
