THIS WEEKEND: Shelton strawberries being used at festival

The annual Monroe Congregational Church Strawberry Festival is taking place thus weekend on the Monroe Green on Route 111.

Shelton-Jones-StrawberryFI

This is the 44th modern Strawberry Festival following a tradition started in the late 1800s. Festival hours are Saturday, June 20 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, June 21 from noon-5 p.m.

Freshly-picked strawberries are served in strawberry shortcake, whole berry pies, smoothies and chocolate dipped creations, and award-winning strawberry jams.

In past years, more than two tons of berries have been used in creations, with nearly 1,800 pounds of strawberries hand-picked locally at Jones Family Farms in Shelton.

Crafts, fine art, children’s activities

More than 75 juried crafters and fine artists from the East Coast will sell their handmade items and paintings on the Monroe Green. Shop for flowers, clothing, fine art, jewelry, furniture, toys, glass, pottery, and crafts made from wood and metal.

There also will be games for children and live entertainment. No admission fee and free parking.

For information call the church at 203-268-9327 or Angela Cross at 203-394-7145. The church is at 34 Church St., Monroe.
