A detour could bring more traffic than usual to downtown Shelton beginning this weekend.

Route 34 at the Stevenson Dam will be closed from 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 27 through 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1.

FirstLight Hydro Generating Co., which owns and operates the Stevenson Dam, will close Route 34 over the dam for four days to perform maintenance work on the dam gates.

Traffic will be detoured using Route 111 in Monroe, Route 110 in Monroe and Shelton, and Bridge Street in Shelton to cross over the Housatonic River to Derby, rejoining Route 34.

Most work on the weekend

In an effort to minimize the impact to the public, most of the work will be done throughout the weekend, according to First Light officials.

The Stevenson Dam takes traffic over the Housatonic River and forms the border between Monroe and Oxford. Route 34 is known as Roosevelt Drive when it goes over the dam.

Long-distance traffic is advised to take Route 8 and Interstate 84 to avoid the Stevenson Dam from June 27 to July 1.
