Local strawberries are at their peak this week at Jones Family Farms in Shelton.
“After 50 years in the business, this spring has been perhaps the most changeable weather for our strawberries,” said Shelton farmer Terry Jones.
In March the snow lingered, and the plants started their spring growth two to three weeks late. “If you had asked me in late April, I would have guessed we’d not see berries ripe until the end of June,” Jones said.
A record warm May changed that. Then a very cool first week of June put the brakes on ripening.
After this weather roller coaster, strawberries are peaking this week. “It really is time to pick the queen of the fruits,” Jones said.
