The Shelton Post 16 American Legion baseball team lost 1-0 to the visiting East Haven 89ers in the first game of a Zone II doubleheader on Thursday night.
The 89ers (4-6) scratched across the game’s lone run in the top of the seventh inning, before starter Dan Petr shut down Shelton (6-3) in the bottom of the frame.
Petr, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, allowed a one-out infield single to Mark Polkowski in the seventh.
With John Zoppi at the plate, Polkowski attempted to move to second base on a ball in the dirt. 89ers catcher Bryon Kucharski threw him stealing and Zoppi grounded out to second to end the game.
East Haven scratched across its run in the visitor’s half of the seventh, starting with a single to left field by Tyler King off of hard-luck loser Hudson Boles.
King then stole second, advanced to third base on grounder to shortstop by Nick Carbone and scored on Matt Coyle’s RBI groundout. Justin Lynch, the Post 16 shortstop, checked King back, but he broke for home on the toss across the diamond and beat first baseman Zoppi’s throw to the plate.
Boles, who threw a complete game, allowed just four hits, all singles, struck out three and walked two.
Petr issued a lead-off walk to Jake Camp in the bottom of the first, before retiring the next 13 batters in a row.
With two outs in the fifth, Jordan Urbani walked and Polkowski reached on an error. Petr skirted danger, getting Zoppi on a grounder back to the mound.
In the bottom of the sixth, Shelton threatened again.
David Wells walked and Paul Salley punched a hit-and-run single through the right side. But, Petr struck out Boles and Marc Zoppi hit a chopper to second base to defuse the threat.
Shelton defeated East Haven, 5-2, in the series opener on Wednesday night.
