Three years ago Dan and Dave Beardsley planted 320 peach, plum and nectarine trees on their farm. This summer the trees will be mature enough to provide locally grown fruit for sale.
The new orchard is on Beardsley’s property, but it does not lend itself to be a pick-your-own orchard. There are close neighbors and a street to cross making PYO unsafe. Dan Beardsley says they will have 12 varieties of peaches, 2 of nectarines, and 3 of plums. Each new variety should ripen every 3-4 days throughout August and the first half of September.
“There’s not many peach growers around because they are susceptible to late spring frosts during bloom this far north, but we think they are worth the chance,” Beardsley says.
Apples also a part of expansion
The apples will ripen in the first half of September and will be available for Pick-Your-Own on weekends or fresh picked in the store every day. Customers can watch the fresh cider being pressed in the fall season every weekend and as needed during the week as well.
