The Shelton Post 16 American Legion baseball team beat visiting North Haven, 7-0, on Friday in both teams’ regular-season finales.
Shelton (16-12) will compete in the state tournament, starting tomorrow at 12 p.m. Pairings will be announced at http://www.hometeamsonline.com/teams/?u=ctstatetourn&s=baseball.
On Friday, Mark Polkowski and Jake Camp combined to shut out North Haven (7-23), with Polkowski working six innings. He allowed just four hits, struck out three and walked three, before Camp came on in relief in the seventh.
Offensively, Shelton scored four runs in the top of the first inning off of North Haven starter Kyle Scafariello. Paul Salley, who had two hits, two RBIs and one run scored, led off with a towering double to left field.
After Camp fouled out, Lynch rolled an RBI single through the left side. Hudson Boles followed with a single, Marc Zoppi’s RBI groundout made it 2-0 and Jordan Urbani walked.
John Zoppi’s run-scoring single upped the margin to 3-0, before Urbani stole home on the back end of a double steal.
Polkowski stranded six runners over the first three frames and retired nine batters in a row at one point.
In the bottom of the fifth, Camp walked and came around to score on a wild pitch. Salley added a two-run single, on the heels of a sacrifice bunt by Rudy Kurowski, to provide the final scoreline.
