Person of the week: Cara Fortier

Shelton native Cara Fortier made history on Friday, July 31, 2015 when she was promoted to sergeant for the Cheshire Police Department. Her promotion makes her their first female sergeant in 61 years.

Fortier’s family and Shelton’s Mayor Mark Lauretti were all in attendance for her promotion ceremony.

Fortier received her Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Western Connecticut State University.  She earned her Master’s degree from Post University in 2014 while working full time for Cheshire’s PD and raising her two and a half year-old son.

“Not only am I the first female sergeant in 61 years, but I am the first officer in Cheshire’s police department to have a baby while being an officer,” said Fortier. “My family is awesome. My husband is also a police officer, but in Watertown so it makes it a lot easier to do my job because we work two different shifts. My parents also live next door to us so having them so close and provide us with support makes this all possible.”

Ann Walsh, Fortier’s mother, said she is beyond proud of her daughter’s achievements as an officer and her progress doesn’t surprise her because she has seen how hard she works.

Fortier said being the first female sergeant in the department in more than a half-century adds some extra pressure for her to do well, but more than anything she is honored.

“Everyone is obviously going to be looking at you,” said Fortier. “Along with just moving into a new position and having to learn it I am a little nervous but more excited and ready to take on the challenge.”

The job can get stressful at times with juggling her family life but moving up the ranks has always been a part of her plan so she was aware that there would be sacrifices.

This is the beginning of a new part in her journey and Fortier said this is exactly what she wanted to do.

“I am very proud of where I am and all of the support I have gotten so far really means the world to me,” said Fortier.

She was born and raised in Shelton and didn’t move out of the city until she got a job with the Cheshire Police Department.
