Today in History: August 24th

Baseball’s Hit King saw his career come to an end when he was banned from baseball on this date in 1989. The HAN Network’s Donald Eng takes a look back at that arrest and what it meant, along with other historic notes about Aug. 24.

Check out Don’s video report below:

More than 1,700 years earlier, Mount Vesuvius erupted burring the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae in volcanic ash. Also on this day in history: Pope Innocent III delcares the Magna Cara invalid in return for King John’s submission to his authority. About 600 years later, British troops invade Washington, D.C., and burn the White House, the Capitol Building and many other structures in the city.

In New York in the 1960s, Abbie Hoffman leads the Youth International Party to temporarily disrupt trading at the New York Stock Exchange by throwing dollar bills from the viewing gallery onto the trading floor.

In 1989, Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose is banned from baseball for gambling by Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti.

In 1992, Hurricane Andrew makes landfall just south of Miami as a Category 5 hurricane and started its destruction across thousands of square miles.
