State Education Commissioner Wentzell meets with Liscinsky, C.E.S. Representative Council

Connecticut Department of Education Commissioner, Dianna Wentzell visited Cooperative Educational Services (C.E.S.) on Sept. 4 to discuss recent statewide test scores and honor award-winning educators, including a paraeducator from Shelton.

Dr. Wentzell attended the first C.E.S. Representative Council meeting of the new 2015-16 school year. C.E.S. is a Regional Educational Service Center (RESC) that serves many towns in the Fairfield County, including Shelton. Its representative council is comprised of elected members of the Boards of Education that C.E.S. serves.

Arlene Liscinsky of Shelton is President of the C.E.S. Representative Council. She sat next to Wentzell while the Commissioner discussed the recently released scores from the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) test. The state implemented SBAC as its standardized test during the 2014-15 school year.

Wentzell also wished C.E.S. and its member districts a successful 2015-16 school year and congratulated the RESC’s teacher and paraeducator of the year. The 2015 Teacher of the Year is Joe Milositz, of Stratford, a social studies teacher at C.E.S.’ Six to Six Interdistrict Magnet School in Bridgeport.

The 2015 Paraeducator of the Year is Shelton resident Jamie Toppin, a paraeducator in the C.E.S. Special Education division. Toppin works with students in the Reaching Independence through Supported Education (RISE) program, a collaborative effort among C.E.S., area school districts, and Sacred Heart University. RISE is offered to students ages 18-21 with limited cognitive functioning who can benefit from a placement in a more age-appropriate setting versus a high school environment.

Both Milositz and Toppin will be considered for statewide awards for their respective categories.
