Echo Hose Hook & Ladder units responded to Bridgeport Avenue in the area of Blanchette’s Thursday evening to reports of a motor vehicle accident which left 24-year-old Leigh Sabo of Shelton dead.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. Shelton Police, Fire and EMS responded to a head-on collision in the area of Bridgeport Avenue and Nells Rock Road. Initial investigation revealed a Buick Century driven by Sabo who was traveling north on Bridgeport Ave and struck a Mazda CX9 driven by 41-year-old, Leigh Brewster who was traveling south on Bridgeport Avenue.
Sabo was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Sabo’s 15 month old daughter was in the vehicle and was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Brewster was also transported to the hospital for minor injuries. Sabo later pronounced dead at Bridgeport hospital.
The Shelton Police Traffic Division Reconstruction Team is currently investigation this accident. No enforcement action has been taken at this time. Any witnesses or persons with additional information may call the Shelton Police Traffic Division at 203-924-1544.
Sabo was a former waitress at the Plaza diner located on Bridgeport Avenue and the news of her death took the staff by complete surprise, according to co-owner Damon Anastasian.
“We are all shocked,” said Anastasian. “She always had a smile on her face, always got along with the guests and made so many friends here over the course of the time that she worked here.”
According to Echo Hose, Squad 1 arrived finding an occupant unconscious trapped in the vehicle. Members from Squad 1 removed the roof and lifted the dashboard to remove the patient. Additional ambulances were requested for other patients. Squad 1, Engine 42, Car 1 and Car 3 operated on scene.
