Kylee Opper scored a pair of goals to lead the Shelton High girls soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Foran High in Milford on Thursday night.
Kaleigh Panek also scored for coach Marvin Miller’s Gaelettes, who improved to 6-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the SCC.
All the goals came in the first half.
Senior tri-captain Juliane Niedzwiecki spotted Opper running free up the sideline and delivered a spot-on pass to the junior, who beat a defender and booted a shot off Foran’s closing keeper Samantha Mitchell and into the net at the 26:28.
Opper’s second tally was a thing of beauty. After receiving Kathryn Arena’s head-flick pass 30-yards out, Opper used three dribbles, the last a crossover to create space before blasting a rising shot from just outside the 18 that Mitchell got two hands on but couldn’t stop. Shelton led 2-0 with 16:18 remaining in the first half.
Panek’s goal completed a fine passing sequence, with Kristen Willey finding Panek, who rocketed a shot off a diving Mitchell by the near post at the 6:49 mark.
Mitchell, who had three saves in an active first half, reinjured a shoulder on the play and was taken to the hospital. Maddy Mitchell, who finished with five stops, came on to play goal for the Lions (4-5-2).
Shelton goalie Courtney Litts had four saves before Shelby Offord (one save) took the field in the second half.
Midfiielders and fellow captains Michelle Gutierrez and Niedzwiecki, with Sarah Skoronski, Arena and Kristen Shuster, helped Shelton finish with a 21-7 shot advantage.
Captain Jillian Engeldrum, Alyson Yakowicz, Olivia Gill, Willey, Erin Keary and Sarah Vahos helped protect the Gaelette keepers.
Shelton will visit Cheshire High on Monday at 6 p.m and host Watertown Wednesday at 7:15.
