The Shelton High football team remained unbeaten with a 17-13 victory over Daniel Hand of Madison on Friday night at Finn Stadium in an SCC Division I matchup.
Backup quarterback David Wells led the Gaels (8-0) to victory, after starter Zach Tuskowski suffered a foot injury late in the first quarter.
It wasn’t easy for Shelton, as the Tigers kept it close throughout.
Hand (5-3) cut its deficit to 17-13 on Reid Sweitzer’s 12-yard rushing touchdown with 5:32 left in the fourth quarter.
But, Wells and tailback Peter Hoff helped Shelton run out the clock and secure its eighth consecutive victory.
Hoff’s 1-yard rushing with 2:43 left in the first quarter capped a 38-yard scoring drive, with Joe Zoppi converting the PAT for a 7-0 Shelton lead.
A 55-yard punt return by Brett Bilcheck set up Hand’s first touchdown, a 10-yard strike from quarterback Nick Van Dell to Ryan Kaufmann, with 4:07 left in the second quarter. Pedro Sander’s PAT tied it at 7, but Wells and Shelton provided a response heading into the half.
Sam Kirk beat his defender on a double move, with Wells delivering a 19-yard touchdown pass to close out a 10-play, 65-yard scoring drive with 42.9 seconds left.
The Tigers rolled all the way down to the Shelton 2-yard line coming out of the half, but Shelton’s defense forced a turnover on downs.
Neither team broke through in the third quarter and Zoppi booted a 21-yard field goal to extend the Gael margin to 17-7.
Shelton hosts Hamden (1-7) next Friday at 7 p.m. on Senior Night.
