Auditions for ‘Hairspray’ at Center Stage Theatre Dec. 5

Center Stage Theatre artistic director, Gary Scarpa, has announced that auditions for the Broadway musical Hairspray on Saturday will take place at the theatre on Dec. 5 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Eligible candidates are teens and adults who are Caucasian and African American. All roles are open. Candidates should be prepared to sing 60 seconds of a song of their choice, accompanied by a CD or MP3 that they provide. Candidates will also participate in a dance audition.

The 2003 winner of the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for “Best Musical”, Hairspray is based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name. The plot centers around a “pleasingly plump” teenager named Tracy Turnblad, who dreams of dancing on the “Corny Collins Show” on television. In addition to the good times of the early 1960s, Hairspray depicts themes of rebellion, discrimination and teen triumph. The production features hit tunes like “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now,” “Good Morning Baltimore,” “You Can’t Stop the Beat” and “Welcome to the ‘60s.”

Center Stage Theatre is a non-profit organization, founded in 2005 by directors Gary and Francesca Scarpa. The theatre presents a full season of five productions, using age appropriate casting.
