The Darien Blue Wave and New Canaan Rams will renew their winter rivalry in a boys ice hockey clash at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the Darien Ice Rink, and you can watch the game live on the HAN Network in the video player below:
Darien and New Canaan have had dramatically different starts, with the Wave going 2-0 and the Rams going 0-2. Darien defeated Hamden, 6-0, and Fairfield Prep, 4-1, while New Canaan lost to Notre Dame-West Haven, 4-2, and Hamden, 6-2.
Darien won all three meetings with New Canaan last year, 6-3 and 4-2 during the regular season, and 2-0 in the league semifinals. The Rams’ last win over Darien was a 5-2 decision in the 2014 FCIAC championship game.
The Blue Wave had an outstanding campaign last winter, going 25-2-1 and beating Greenwich for the FCIAC and the state’s CIAC Division I championships.
Chris Gerwig stepped down as head coach during the offseason, but the Wave hasn’t missed a beat under new head coach Mac Budd, who was an assistant for Gerwig during the past four years.
Herbie Hazelton has been one of the scoring stars during the early part of the schedule, netting two goals in each of the first two games. Goalie David Voigt, who took over between the pipes after the graduation Michael Colon, has been stellar as well, allowing just one goal while facing 54 shots in two games.
New Canaan went 12-8-3 last year and had a quick exit from the Div. I tournament when it lost a back-and-forth battle with Notre Dame-Fairfield, 6-4, in the opening round.
The Rams have a young team with just four seniors on the roster, and are led by captain Drew Morris, a junior defensemen, and assistant captains James Franzis, a senior defenseman, and Tyler Hill, a junior forward who is the Rams’ top scoring threat.
