The Shelton High boys basketball team clipped New Canaan High, 54-48, to win the Shelton Holiday Tournament title on Wednesday night at Murray Gymnasium.

Casey Belade earned MVP honors for the Gaels (2-2), scoring 14 points, while Matt Terrasi notched a game-high 15 markers for Shelton. Jeff Stockmal chipped in with 12 points for Gaels.

Tyler Sweeney led the Rams (1-3) with a game-high 26 points and James Cravatto added 15.

Cravatto, Sweeney, Nolan McKinnon from Berlin, Nolan Beardsley from Jonathan Law and Stockmal made the All-Tournament team.

Shelton took control of the game late in the first quarter and stayed ahead the rest of the way.

A putback from Stockmal snapped a 12-12 deadlock with 90 seconds left in the first quarter, before Stockmal assisted Kevin Robinson for a layup to give Shelton a 16-12 edge heading into the second frame.

New Canaan trailed the rest of the way, as the Gaels grabbed a 26-21 margin heading into the locker room at halftime.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Sweeney provided the Rams with their first points of the second half at the 1:36 mark of the third.

That narrowed the margin to 31-24, and the Gaels did not relinquish their advantage.

New Canaan made a late push, with Sweeney sinking a 3-pointer and then converting a layup off of a stolen inbounds pass.

Stockmal answered with a basket on the other end, before Terrasi and Jack Gleason combined to go 4-for-4 from the foul line to secure the victory.
