Foran High School’s wrestling team won a battle of two of the Southern Connecticut Conference’s top teams, defeating visiting Shelton High 42-31 on Wednesday night.
The Lions improved to 23-3 and the Gaels dropped just their second match of the season, falling to 18-2.
Eight of the bouts went into the third period in this evenly-contested clash.
At 106 pounds, Shelton’s Steven Reyes pinned Mike Giordano in 5:27.
At 113, Foran’s Gino Esposito scored a 21-7 major decision over Chandler Duhaime.
In the 120 pound division, Shelton’s Nico DiStassio blanked Will Mauro 8-0.
At 126, Shelton’s Nate Reyes pinned Elijah Moretti in 4:39.
At 132, Foran’s Jubilee Witte earned a 15-5 major decision over Jake Litts.
At 138, Foran’s Ryan Luth pinned Alex Ercolani in 3:39.
At 145, Foran’s Michael Ross defeated Kyle McGinnis 14-4.
In the 152 division, Shelton’s Delonne Sloan pinned Umer Khan in 44 seconds.
Shelton forfeited two weight classes – the 160 and 170 pound divisions – because of injuries, enabling 160-pounder Noah Hubler and 170 grappler Charles Cornell to pick up victories.
At 182, Shelton’s Daniel Persson pinned Qasim Khan in 3:08.
In the 195 division, Shelton’s Ray Weiner got past Colby Stuart in a 6-5 decision.
In what both Foran coach David Esposito and Shelton coach Bill Maloney described as the biggest match of the meet, Foran’s Patrick Grinder pinned David Brown in 5:20.
The match was even at 4-4 in the third period and could have gone either way before Grinder finished things off.
At 285, Foran’s Luke Edmondson pinned Robert O’Brien in 41 seconds.
