Seven members of the Shelton High football team committed to continuing their playing careers in college on National Signing Day.
In a ceremony held in the Shelton High foyer, lineman Matt Zelanin and linebacker Ron Hubbard signed with Western Connecticut State University; guard/center Steven Parravano with Western New England; quarterback Zach Tuskowski with Massachusetts Maritime Academy; Sam and Alex Kirk with Wesleyan University and Kevin Robinson with Division I Austin Peay (Tenn.).
“It’s exciting,” Shelton High head coach Jeff Roy said. “It’s a great group of kids… I’m excited for them, they’re all going to great schools. It’s exciting for them and Shelton football.”
The Gaels finished as runners-up in the Class LL state final the last two seasons, and were fourth overall in the GameTimeCT/Register Top 10 final poll this past year.
Zelanin, an All-SCC Division I first-team selection, and Parravano anchored Shelton’s offensive line that piled up over 5,000 yards of total offense and 64 touchdowns.
Marshalling a stingy defense, Hubbard notched 152 tackles, four sacks and six passes defensed in earning All-SCC Division I first-team honors.
Sam Kirk recorded 42 tackles and four interceptions on defense, 750 yards of total offense and 10 touchdowns. Alex Kirk added 24 catches for 461 yards and six touchdowns. On defense, he totaled 76 tackles and six sacks. Both were named All-SCC first-teamers.
In his first season as a varsity starter, Tuskowski threw for 2,227 yards, 29 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
Robinson, a two-time All-SCC selection, was his main target, hauling in 45 receptions for 925 yards and 12 touchdowns, while rushing for four more scores. On defense, Robinson made two interceptions, and he also led the state with a 43.8 punting average.
“It’s something we all worked together for,” Robinson said. “This was a dream of ours. It’s finally here and it’s special.”
