Newtown’s former first selectman sent out an email Monday morning thanking Connecticut’s municipal leaders for the support so many towns and cities have offered Newtown in the wake of Friday’s school shooting that killed 26 at Sandy Hook Elementary School, including 20 first graders.

“Although the amazing expressions of love and support from all over the world have been heart warming and healing, our hope is that no other community will ever have to experience the horror that has evoked it,” Herbert Rosenthal, a past Newtown first selectman and former president of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, wrote Monday morning.

Here is his letter:

Dear Mayors, First Selectmen, Council Chairs and Town/City Managers:

On behalf of Newtown First Selectman E. Patricia Llodra and all the residents of Newtown, I am writing to thank you for your numerous emails and phone calls offering your kind thoughts, prayers and support for the families of the victims and all of us who live in Newtown as we strive to recover from this senseless, horrific tragedy.

We appreciate the good wishes that you have expressed on behalf of yourselves and your communities. At this point we are coping, but we may take you up on some of your offers in the days and weeks ahead.

There are a number of organizations that will accept contributions on behalf of the families of the victims or for establishing some lasting memorial. In addition, CCM is considering establishing a Newtown Family Support Fund.

Although the amazing expressions of love and support from all over the world have been heart warming and healing, our hope is that no other community will ever have to experience the horror that has evoked it.

Warmest personal regards,
Herb
