The Shelton High wrestling team competed in the State Open on Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Five Gael wrestlers competed, Shelton finishing 24th with 33.5 points, second behind Foran for Southern Connecticut Conference teams. New Fairfield won the team title with 115.2 points, followed by Danbury (112.5) and New Milford (111). Foran finished seventh overall with 89 points.

Senior Dan Persson placed at 182, finishing sixth overall. The top four qualifiers in each bracket qualify for New Englands, so Persson will be an alternate.

Junior Chandler Duhaime won four matches at 113, placing seventh overall, while Kyle McGinnis captured a pair of victories at 145. McGinnis finished his wrestling career with 134 wins, good for third all-time in Shelton history.

Freshman Ray Weiner went 2-2 at 195, while senior Nico Distasio notched one victory at 120.
