Man in serious condition following Route 8 crash

A Shelton man is in “serious condition” after the back left tire from a trailer smashed his windshield in a route 8 accident involving three vehicles on Sunday afternoon, March 6.

Mark J. Smolen, 44, of Tamarac Drive in Shelton was driving his 2004 Mustang in the left lane northbound on route 8 shortly after exit 19 in Seymour when a camp trailer headed in the opposite direction lost one of its tires.

According to state police, the detached tire made its way across the median striking Smolen’s windshield and causing him to swerve into the right lane and crash into another vehicle before losing complete control.

Smolen’s Mustang then reportedly hit a guardrail before traveling down an embankment and getting wedged between several trees.

The drivers of the other two vehicles were not harmed, but Smolen was transported to Waterbury hospital for his injuries.

The crash is still under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to call Troop I in Bethany at 203-393-4200, ext. 3085.
