Susan G. Komen Southern New England has announced that Sara Buglione, 10, of Shelton, has been selected as the winner for the 2016 Kids for the Cure® t-shirt design contest.
Sara’s artwork will be featured on all youth t-shirts at the Race for the Cure Fairfield County on May 7 at Sherwood Island State Park.
Sara discovered her love for running last year when she and her mother Janet participated in the 2015 Race for the Cure Fairfield County. Their neighbor, a breast cancer survivor, had registered for the Race and was posting about it on her social media, asking friends and family to join her. Janet asked her daughter if she wanted to join the team and Sara agreed.
After running the 5K last year Sarah saw the kids’ t-shirts and knew that she could create a winning design.
When her mom saw the post online for the upcoming 2016 Kid’s for the Cure t-shirt contest, she told Sara and she began her design right away.
“She spent a lot of time on the design, created many rough drafts,” said Janet. “It was a lot of trial and error. She even ran around the house collecting all the pink markers she could find.”
Sara did all the work herself and spent a lot of time coming up with the slogan that would be featured on the shirts, the final selection being “Finish The Fight. Wear Pink With Pride.”
When Janet received the news that Sara had won she was excited to tell her daughter and could not wait for her to get home.
“Sara was really excited because she wanted to win so badly and see her design on the back of the kid’s t-shirts; we’re sure she will wear her shirt with pride,” said Janet.
Sara will be running the 5K again this year with her neighbor’s team, and this year she hopes to win a medal for her age group. Her Girl Scout troop has planned a trip to a museum on the day of the Race; Sara hopes she can make it, but says there is no way she is going to miss the Race for the Cure.
The 2016 Race for the Cure Fairfield County will be held on Saturday, May 7 at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. The 5K run and walk begin at 9 a.m. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. at the park. For more information, to register, or to make a donation, visit KomenSouthernNewEngland.org.
