McGinnis, Lewis named SCC Scholar Athletes

Kyle McGinnis and Virginia Lewis were named SCC Scholar Athletes for the Winter season.

Kyle McGinnis and Virginia Lewis of Shelton High were named Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes of the Month for the Winter season.

The SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month program is sponsored by the Sports Center of Connecticut and recognizes student athletes who have a minimum of a B (3.0) overall and earn a varsity letter.

Student athletes also demonstrate leadership qualities by being a positive role model both on and off the field and show commitment to self-improvement and put their team before themselves.

Kyle McGinnis

A member of the wrestling and boys lacrosse teams, McGinnis is ranked 28th out of 412 in his class, with a grade-point average is 95.70.

Other accolades include: wrestling team captain, boys lacrosse team captain, two-time SCC All-Academic team, two-time SCC wrestling champion, State Open wrestling qualifier, SHS Wrestler’s Wrestler Award, CAPT Scholar, Spanish Honor Society, AP Scholar with Distinction, Honor Roll, Student of the Month, All-SCC Wrestling team, National Honor Society, JSA Club, third degree black belt Tang Soo Do, volunteer Griffin Hospital Children’s Safety Fair and Army Reserve Scholar Athlete award.

“Kyle truly is a Scholar Athlete,” Shelton wrestling coach Bill Maloney said. “A two-time wrestling and lacrosse captain, Kyle has excelled both in the classroom, on the mat, and on the field.”

Virginia Lewis

Lewis, a member of the girls cross country, indoor track and outdoor track and field teams is ranked 37th in her class of 412, with a GPA of 94.92.

Other accolades include: girls cross country captain, indoor track captain, girls outdoor track and field captain, SCC All-Academic team, CAPT Scholar, Cross Country Team Scholar Athlete, CIAC Scholar Athlete, World Language Honor Society, Spanish Club, Honor Roll, Student of the Month, AP Scholar, Key Club, FBLA, Volunteer Little Kickers Soccer Camp, Boys & Girls Club Soccer Coach, JSA Club and Book & Achievement award.

“Virginia is the perfect example of what all future captains should aspire to be,” Girls indoor track and field coach Scott Snell said. “Her commitment to athletics and academics is unwavering.  She has proven this by battling back from a serious injury last year and has earned her spot once again as our team’s top distance runner.

“She understands the value of hard work, dedication, and constantly sets a positive example for all of our younger athletes. She is a true leader and excellent role-model.  It has been a sincere pleasure to have Ginny as a captain of our track and field teams.”
