The Shelton High softball team swung hot bats on Monday afternoon against visiting West Haven, but the Westies’ bats were scorching.
West Haven scored three times in the top of the first inning en route to a 17-7 win over the Gaelettes, who fell to 1-1.
An error on Veronica Lynn’s lead-off grounder started the deluge for the Blue Devils, with Makenna White and Sara Duprey following with RBI singles. Lynn’s RBI triple and a run-scoring base hit by Alissa Tonnuc made it 5-0 heading into the bottom of the second.
Shelton responded with a pair of runs, sparked by a lead-off triple from MacKenzie Bures. Bures then scored on Bryana Heuser’s single, before Heuser moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Alexis Belco.
After Lillian Rivera flied out to right field, Jilian Komornik ripped an RBI single to make it 5-2.
West Haven tacked on four more runs in the top of the third, keyed by Julia Bothwell’s two-run single.
Alexis Calhoun’s sacrifice fly, scoring Kayla Resto, narrowed Shelton’s gap to 9-3.
Duprey tripled to start the West Haven fourth, scoring on a groundout by Sadielee Roberts.
The Westies put the game away with five runs in fifth. Lynn delivered a two-run single and Marron and Bothwell added run-scoring hits.
Resto notched an RBI double in the fifth and Maggie Carlucci drove in a run with an infield hit, but the teams traded runs the rest of the way.
