On Sunday April 17, members of the Shelton Fire Department Marine Units 4 and 5 provided safety coverage for the University of New Haven’s Civil Engineering Department during their open water training with their concrete canoe project boat.
They practiced the 600 meter endurance course
a.A total of 600 meters in distance with a minimum of two turns.
b.200 and 400 meter sprint course the sprint course that consist a straight course 100 meters out across the river with an 180 degree turn, and 100 meters back.
c.The co-ed 400 meter race consisting of two laps of the sprint course.
The Shelton Fire rescue boat teams assisted the school’s rowing team, so they could move about the lake/river and to learn to control their concrete canoe with less worry of falling in and getting wet.
The water temp of the lake was 49 degrees, so a SFD rescuer swimmer was dressed in an orange cold water suit and was ready to enter the water to help get any student out of the water quickly.
