Shelton High School held its Seventeenth Annual Book and Achievement Awards Program as a school-wide celebration of student achievement on Thursday, May 20, in the school’s gymnasium.

Dr. Beth Smith, Headmaster, opened the program speaking to the core values of the school requiring students to meet high academic and behavioral expectations.

She stated “We believe it is important to celebrate student achievement and to gather as a learning community to recognize those students who have met our learning expectations as stated in our core values.”

She acknowledged the donors who made the day possible and congratulated and thanked the more than 200 family members in attendance. Mrs. Kathy Riddle, Guidance Curriculum Leader, welcomed honored guests. Jillian Ortoli, Student Council President, led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The SHS Concert Choir sang the Star Spangled Banner. Henry Jiang, senior class president, provided the welcome address. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Christopher Clouet, Chairman of the Board of Education, Mark Holden, and Mayor Lauretti provided greetings. Housemasters John Skerritt, James Zavodjancik and James Colandrea announced the award recipients.

Awards of $100 and under totaling over $8,000, as well as the university and college book awards and certificates of recognition, were presented to 172 students.  All of the award recipients have taken advantage of the many opportunities offered to them at Shelton High School and in their community.  They have displayed qualities of scholarship and have demonstrated the important traits of leadership, citizenship, and community service.  The award recipients were nominated for these awards by their teachers, school counselors, administrators, coaches and club advisors.  The evening Awards Program will be held on Thursday, June 2, in the SHS auditorium.
