Track and field: Stevens leads Shelton at SCCs

Samantha Stevens of Shelton High won two individual events at the SCC championships on Tuesday at Sheehan High in Wallingford.

Stevens’ first-place throw of 129-feet, 4 inches set a meet record in the discus, breaking the previous record of 127-07 set by Diane Potkay of Derby High in 1996. Stevens also won the shot put with a throw of 41-1.5 for the Gaelettes, outdoing her seed of 39-05.25.

Lauren Oakes won in the javelin with a toss of 110-5 and was fifth in the shot put at 33-1.5.

Nicole Pingree took fourth in the pole vault at 8-0.

Sarah Lipinski was second in the triple jump at 34-4.5.

The girls 4×800 team of Nicolette Vartuli, Kristen Shuster, Heather Garrett and Olivia Gill was fifth in 10:24.75.

In the high jump, Kelly Hurd was fifth at 4-8.

Nicole Norris was fifth in the discus at 101-11.

Erin Alder was fifth in the javelin at 99-8.

Mercy High of Middletown won the team title with 75.5 points, followed by Cheshire (73) and Shelton.

On the boys side, Shelton finished third overall with 51 points.

Patrick English was second in the 400 in 49.52 to lead the Gaels.

Ethan Shuster was third in the triple jump with a leap of 42-3.5, while Zachary Deptula was third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.59. Shuster was fifth in the 110 hurdles in 15.89.

The 4×100 team of Jostin Cobb, Matt Bean, Camerin Gumbs and Tyler Hansen was fourth with a time of 44.51.

The 4×800 team of Joshua Sacoto, Billy Simics, Joe Lombardi and Joe Wannagot was fourth with a time of 8:17.55.

Robert Dillon was fifth in the 3200 in 9:54.53, while Ed Radzion was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 42-2.75.
