Connecticut Sports Talk, June 20

With a new week underway, Rob Adams and Donald Eng need to catchup on the weekend. That’s the theme for this potpourri edition of Nutmeg Sports on the HAN Network.

Among the topics of note: Danny Melzer, the former Stamford player-turned coach, who accepted the head coaching job for the boys basketball team at New Canaan. Also, Greenwich grabbed two of three in American Legion baseball from Trumbull. With a collection of great FCIAC high school players, the two teams seem to be the best of the lot in Legion ball. Is anyone else in the mix?

Simon Mathias of Ridgefield (and the University of Pennsylvania) made some big news, and Rob and Don examine that as well. The guys also introduce the first team for the all-FCIAC softball team. Of course, some of the names won’t come as a surprise.

We look at a few items of note from outside the FCIAC, such as the Hartford Yard Goats. The boondoggle (that’s the word Rob uses) that is their new stadium is becoming a major headache for the team and the city of Hartford. Where will they play next? Yet the New Britain Bees, playing in the Goats’ former stadium (as the Rock Cats), are doing just fine at the turnstiles.

Athletes of the Week are back, as the guys announce the winners and nominees, and we can’t let the show end without a mention of what happened on Sunday night, as Cleveland ended 52 years of frustration. It’s a story that all sports fans should take note of.

Somehow, the Captain and Tennille also get mentioned. Don’t ask.

The HAN Network, formerly known as Hersam Acorn Newspapers, is the exclusive FCIAC broadcast partner through the spring of 2018.
