Little League: Prospect tops Shelton National to win Districts

The Shelton National 11-12 Little League All-Stars’ run in the District III tournament came to end in the final on Friday at the Kudej Complex in their if-game against Prospect.

Prospect erupted for six runs in the bottom of the first, two in the second and eight more in the third to cruise to a 16-6 victory over Shelton National in four innings.

Ryan Montini powered Prospect, which advanced to the Section II final at the Petit Complex in Berlin, with three hits and four runs batted in. Croy Mastropietro added two hits and three runs scored and Drew Shea had two hits and two runs scored. Montini and Shea belted two-run home runs in the first inning off of National starter Billy McGuire.

For SNLL, John Riccio, Andrew Hafele and Ryan Hafele slugged home runs. Riccio and Andrew Hafele hammered back-to-back home runs in the top of the third to narrow the Nationals’ gap to 8-4, but Prospect responded with an eight-spot in the bottom of the third — sending 14 batters to the plate.

SNLL attempted to rally in the top of fourth, loading the bases with two outs. McGuire delivered an RBI single to narrow the gap to 16-6, but Prospect got a force at the plate and McGuire was cut down at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch for the final out.

Prospect will face the District VI champion on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. in Berlin.
