Shelton fourth at Trumbull

The Shelton High wrestling team placed fourth at the Trumbull Duals on Saturday.
Coach Bill Maloney’s Gaels are 9-6 overall and 4-0 in the Southern Connecticut Conference.
Shelton opened with a 43-34 win over Amity of Woodbridge in a non-league match.
“That was a good match,” Maloney said. “We knew we had those two forfeits (at 195 and heavyweight) in our back pocket. That’s why I didn’t send our 220 (Alex Merdinger) out. He’s not feeling all that well.”
Shelton took a 15-0 lead, with freshman Nico Distasio winning an 8-3 decision at 106 pounds to start the match.
Freshman Kyle McGinnis (1:42) at 113) and sophomore Scott Plucenik (5:20 at 120) followed with pins.
Amity got back in its when Jesse Cala pinned freshman John Litts in 2:07 at 126 and Mike Cala pinned sophomore Darwin Delgado in 1:32 at 132 pounds.
The roller-coaster ride began in the 138-pound bout, where senior Mike Chernesky pinned at 1:33 of the first to make the match 21-12 Shelton.
Amity’s Dan Grober drew five points back with a 16-1 win by technical fall over freshman Rich Pogacsas at 145, and the Spartans went in front 24-21 when Evan Donahue pinned junior Nick Pogacsas in the second period at 152.
Junior Liam Cummings put the Gaels back in front with a pin in 1:46 at 160 pounds.
It was 29-27 Amity after  Dave Buono won by 18-2 technical fall over junior Juan Carlos Barranca at 170.
Senior Mac Thompson gave Shelton the breathing room it needed, as his 14-0 major decision cleared the deck for the forfeits to work their magic.
Senior Will Dimeo and junior Jose Nieves had their hands raised unopposed at 195 and heavyweight.
The Gaels then pinned a 61-16 loss on Masuk of Monroe.
McGinnis opened the match with an 18-second fall at 113 and Plucenik followed with a 58-second pin.
Litts (forfeit), Delgado (forfeit), Chernesky (11-0 major decision) and Nick Pogacsas (1:03 pin) made it 34-0 before Masuk’s Doug Katz took a 16-4 major decision at 152.
Shelton won the next three matches, with Cummings (5-0 decision), Barranco (1:53 pin) and Thompson (forfeit) gaining team points.
Masuk ‘s Sal Longo (5:31) and Mark Flader (4:46) scored pins before Nieves (forfeit) and Distasio (1:44 pin) put the final points in the win column.
Nanuet High (N.Y.) won the first four classes and defeated the locals by a score of 48-35.
Nick Pogacsas pinned his 145-pound foe in 5:00 to break the schneid.
Cummings (13-1 major decision), Thompson (forfeit), Dimeo (9-3 decision) and Ashley Blake (forfeit at 113) completed the Gael scoring.
Shelton lost a 57-12 decision to Trumbull in the match for third.
Nick Pogacsas (6-4 decision), Barranco (9-3 decision) and Distasio (forfeit) accounted for the Gael points.
Glastonbury defeated Nanuet for the team title.
