Any time a 911 call is placed requesting assistance the Shelton Fire Department responds immediately and without question. When Gabriel Aponte and Carl Leonzi, who are working to receive their Eagle Scout badges from BSA Houstonic Council Troop 28, were offered the opportunity to assist the White Hills Fire Company #5 on Church St. in the White Hills section of Shelton they did not hesitate to answer that call for aide. They were specifically asked to take on the task of painting the massive White Hill Co. #5 fire house.
Gabriel, the son of Nancy and Joseph Aponte is attending Fairfield Prep., and Carl is the son of Victoria and Joseph Leonzi and attends Shelton High School. Gabriel and Carl are juniors in high school and were very eager to take on the task of painting the White Hills firehouse as part of their BSA community service program to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Carl and Gabriel organized some 35 – 40 volunteers between them to assist in this task. The volunteer painting crews were made up of BSA Troop 28 members along with family and friends who came forward to assist them beginning in November 2015 . The final painting was done in May 2016 to complete the project.
Scout Master Matthew Fama, Project Coach, and Scout Master Carl Leonzi along with other Scout Masters and adults oversaw and supervised the painting program. City of Shelton Building Maint. Supervisor Chris Potucek provided the paint for the project and several persons donated ladders, brushes and other items to assist with the painting project. White Hills Fire Personnel finished those areas where it would have been risky to have unskilled persons working on very high and steep roof top areas.
Both young men will soon be attending a BSA Court of Honor where they will be recognized for completing all the tasks necessary to receive their Eagle Scout badges. Mayor Lauretti, a former member of BSA Troop 25 of the Methodist Church on Rocky Rest Rd. in Shelton, believes that the scouting experience is something every young man should experience. Mayor Lauretti is in attendance whenever a Court of Honor is convened to assist in the festivities and congratulate the Eagle Scout recipients. The positive civic and personal lessons learned in scouting can be easily incorporated into every aspect of person’s life. BSA Troop 28 meets on Thursday evenings at 7:00P at the Nike Site behind Mohegan School.
