The 20th Connecticut River Watershed Council Source to Sea Cleanup, stretching from the Long Island Sound north into Vermont and New Hampshire, is this weekend, and we’ll talk to Alicea Charamut of the CRWC about the effort on Yankee Fisherman on the HAN Network Thursday at 1 p.m.
Then we’ll look at the possible future of the Mill River. South Park, which abuts the river in Easton, is the site of several development proposals, and anglers and conservationists are concerned about the future of one of the most unique and important wild trout streams in the Northeast.
The Easton Courier has covered the proposals and discussions, and we have video showing Citizens for Easton’s proposal to retain the 29.6 acres of town-owned property at 22 South Park Avenue as open space in perpetuity by making it a town park.
Others say the property needs to be sold to keep taxes and municipal debt low. The town owes $4.6 million for the South Park tract, which it purchased in 2008 from Running Brook Farm. At the time, the site was the subject of a 72-unit high-density affordable housing application scheduled for trial in Superior Court in Litchfield.
Citizens for Easton was founded in the 1970s to preserve the South Park site that is the subject of discussion.Community members who aired their views overwhelmingly spoke out in favor of preservation of the South Park site. The audience clapped and cheered in support of Mill River Park proposal and the various speakers.
Yankee Fisherman, presented by The Dock Shop, airs Thursdays at 1 p.m. on the HAN Network. Previous episodes can be watched on demand or listened to as a podcast.
