Football: Shelton holds off Xavier Falcons, 38-35

Shelton High quarterback David Wells scored four touchdowns when coach Jeff Roy’s Gaels defeated Xavier Of Middletown, 38-35, in a Southern Connecticut Conference Tier 1 game played at Finn Stadium on Saturday night.

The Gaels (4-0) came back from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to the Falcons, as Wells completed touchdown passes to Jack Carr (13 yards) and Anthony Schiavo (76 yards) and Joe Zoppi converted his PAT kicks.

Wells ran for a 3-yard score to give Shelton a 21-14 lead at the half.

Zoppi made a 31-yard field goal and Carr broke off an 81-yard TD run to take the score to 31-14 with 2:48 left in the third quarter.

It was 38-28 Shelton after Wells found Schiavo for a 5-yard score in the final period.

Xavier (2-2), behind a three-touchdown fourth quarter, narrowed the gap to 38-35 with 1:39 remaining on a 3-yard TD run by by junior quarterback Will Levis.

The Falcons got the ball back one more time with 45.5 seconds to go at the Shelton 47, but a long pass attempt from Levis to Parker Rowley fell short.

The Gaels will play at Hand of Madison on Friday night at the Surf Club.
