The Shelton High football team went on the road and pinned a 34-20 defeat on Daniel Hand at Strong Field on Friday night in a Southern Connecticut Conference Tier I matchup.
The Gaels led 14-12 edge with 9:02 left in the third quarter following a 13-yard rushing touchdown by Hand quarterback Brett Bilcheck.
Shelton (5-0) answered with a 1-yard scoring plunge from Ronnie Rich — sparking a run of 17 unanswered points for the Gaels. A 10-yard rushing touchdown for Jack Carr and a 19-yard field goal by Joe Zoppi made it 31-14 Shelton with eight minutes left.
The Tigers (1-4) responded with a 1-yard rushing touchdown from tailback Mike Burchell to cut the deficit to 31-20 with 4:38 left to play. Zoppi closed out the scoring with a 35-yard field goal with 2:50 remaining.
Santino Durante hauled in a 70-yard touchdown pass from Wells on the first play from scrimmage, before Zoppi tacked on the PAT to give Shelton an early 7-0 advantage.
An interception by defensive lineman Eddie Radzion set up a first-and-goal from the Hand 10. After a Shelton penalty, Wells threw a 15-yard touchdown to Anthony Schiavo.
Burchell rushed for a 3-yard touchdown, cutting Hand’s deficit to 14-6 at the half.
Shelton returns to action after a league-wide bye week with a road game against North Haven (3-2) at Vanacore Field at 7 on Oct. 21. Hand travels to Palmer Field to face Xavier High (2-3) at 7.
