An Ansonia man was arrested on a warrant Wednesday Oct. 19 for allegedly robbing and assaulting two teens with a machete along the Shelton Riverwalk earlier this month.
Corey Welch of Ansonia was arrested and charged with first degree robbery, first degree assault, carrying a dangerous weapon, and fifth degree larceny. Welch was already in custody at Derby Court and was being held on a $150,000 bond for this incident.
Welch’s arrest stems from a report of a robbery that occurred in the area of the Riverwalk on Oct. 3. at approximately 8 p.m. Police reported that two victims ages 16 and 19 were approached by an unknown male and asked if they “hung around” with a certain person. In a prepared statement sent out by police it said, “the male then pushed the 19 year old victim to the ground and pulled out a machete and put it to his throat.”
Police said the suspect then proceeded to yell, choke and assault the 19 year old. The suspect then took the other victim’s cell phone and personal items and threw them into the Housatonic River. The man eventually let go and allowed both victims to leave. Detectives conducted an investigation and were able to identify Welch as the suspect. No details were disclosed on how Welch was identified as the suspect.
Welch was arraigned on the new charges Wednesday Oct. 19 in Derby court.
